The orchid that grows like a bulb – for when you want to grow orchids but think it might be too hard. Pleiones are orchids but grow up from a bulb that is dormant each winter – even though they are mostly from Asia they are a cool climate orchid. They can be grown indoors or out in the U.K. quite easily (they don’t really like temperatures above 25 degrees) and when dormant they like to be between 1-5 degrees so you can keep them in the fridge/greenhouse in a paper bag.
There are two types; ones that grow leaves first and then bloom, the other is the opposite with the flower blooming first before leaves.
They are a little expensive but each year they grow two bulbs (or sometimes three) from one so you can get more over time.
Just plant them up in a shallow or small pot in small/medium orchid bark and water when dry. When dormant again, import and cut roots short; and repot again in very late winter.
